SBC Workshops
Future SBC-sponsored workshops on cob, earth plaster and building with local juniper are in the works. Watch for upcoming announcements.
These workshops listed below are presented by Janet's Solar Electric and they are for women only. For fees and
hours, please call 275-0557 or visit www.janetssolarelectric.com
Every 1st Saturday of the month - Electrical Wiring
Every 2nd Saturday of the month - Basic Carpentry
Building Materials Available:
The Beaumont office of TCEQ has 75 bales of between 20 and 50
tires per bale available for anyone who will pick them up in Beaumont.
They can be used for earthship type construction. If anyone is
interested they should contact Charlie Adams, TCEQ Beaumont (409)
899-8788.
New Website:
A new cob website (http://cobprojects.info) has been created and they are welcoming submissions of projects
or anything related to building with cob. The website has many regional sections as well as a general
discussion section. There is also a full-featured forum at http://cobprojects.info/phpBB2/. The website
was created by an Austin resident who has participated in some cob projects in Oregon.

September 21st Member Meeting: "The Healing, Hazardous &
Unusual Aspects of Natural and Artificial Electromagnetic Fields
(EMFs)" with James Beal
Join us for
a very informative presentation about EMFs which will be presented
by James Beal. Background information will be provided about basic
EMF effects, natural and artificial, on and from living systems,
with a brief outline of hazards, healing aspects and unusual influences
on consciousness, behavior, and health. Electrosensory and transmission
capabilities of selected living systems will be described. (There
are tie-ins to electrical hypersensitivity, fibromyalgia, chemical
sensitivity, hypothyroidism, and stress). Detection and elimination
of magnetic, electric, and microwave EMFs in homes, offices, and
sacred spaces will also be explained. Detailed backup support
information will be available and EMF detection equipment will
be shown.
James Beal,
a retired NASA engineer from Apollo, Skylab, and Shuttle Programs,
is an international consultant, writer, and speaker about electromagnetic
field effects (EMFs) on and from living systems. He has been collecting
and sharing data about EMF healing and hazardous effects for over
45 years. He provides inspection services for hazardous EMF sources,
and is a dealer for EMF therapeutic health maintenance systems.
You can find out more at EMF Interface Consulting.
Please
join
James to
learn more about electromagnetic fields and how they affect us.
SBC meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 pm at Casa
de Luz, 1701 Toomey Road in the Cielo Room. You are welcome
to join us before the meeting at 6 pm for a wonderful macrobiotic
meal at Casa de Luz.
Alternative Energy Roundup & Green Living Fair in Fredericksburg,
Sept. 23-25
The 6th Annual
Alternative Renewable Energy Roundup and Green Living Fair will
occur on September 23-25, 2005 on the market square in Fredericksburg.
Come out to learn more about: Solar & Wind Energy, Water Use &
Reuse, Energy Conservation, Rainwater Harvesting, Green & Sustainable
Building, Organic Growing, Alternative Transportation, and Straw
Bale Construction. There will be exhibits, free guest speakers,
great food, and family activities.
SBC will need volunteers to help staff our booth. Please talk with Yvonne Hansen at the
upcoming SBC member meeting to find out how you can volunteer. If you can volunteer with the Round-up for a 4-hour shift, then you will get
an organic cotton 2005 Roundup tee shirt, a $16 value, and a 3-day pass to the event, another $16 value.
Marketing Opportunity for SBC Business Members:
The SBC will once again have a booth at the Renewable Energy Roundup.
Part of our mission is to promote our members' sustainable businesses.
If you would like to have your business cards and/or brochures
displayed on our table for distribution to interested visitors,
please bring them to the monthly meeting on Wednesday. Remember,
you can have your business cards and brochures on the business
members' table at our monthly meeting. If you are unable to attend
the meeting and would like to have your informational materials
available at the Roundup, call Gayle at 478-9033 to make arrangements.
Career Expo at Engineers for a Sustainable World National Conference,
Oct. 5 - 9
Sustainability-related
businesses, primarily in engineering, business, and technology
fields, are needed for a career expo on the campus of the University
of Texas at Austin October 5-9, 2005. The expo will be part of
the 2005 Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) National Conference.
Fifty percent of our student members are from underrepresented
populations in engineering (women and ethnic minorities). ESW has a
presence at more than 80 universities in the US, including campus
chapters at CalTech, Cornell University, the University of Michigan, UT
Austin, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley. ESW professional and
student members are active volunteers and have an increased interest in
global issues. Many have studied or volunteered abroad, and many have
learned a second or third language.

World Hands Project - Clinic Expansion Learn to build with alternative
materials
World Hands
will be working again with Fr. Bill Morton of the Columban
Mission of Anapra and the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati to
expand the Santo Nino Center for Special Needs Children in Anapra.
They will add another 500 square foot room to the clinic. The
current clinic is a thriving success and offers many needed services
to families who might otherwise not receive help with their children.
The addition
will be built of shipping pallets stacked to form the walls and
then stuffed with a straw/clay mix that provides insulation to
keep the clinic cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The
shipping pallet design was developed by Jose Louis and Father
Bill. Roof trusses will be constructed of recycled pallets and
a metal roof will be placed above straw insulation and a sheetrock
ceiling for fire protection. All walls will be earthen plastered
with locally available materials.
The addition
will be completed in 2 one-week workshops. Participants can attend
either week or both. Join them for the workshops to learn some
basics of natural building as they build alongside their local
friends to expand this important community space. They are a non-profit
organization, and a portion of the funds collected for this workshop
will be placed toward scholarships for local workers to attend.
Clinic Expansion Week 1
In this first week they will be building the pallet walls from
the foundation up, fabricate all the roof trusses from pallets,
install window bucks, fill the walls with the straw/clay mix and
begin insulating the roof.
When: October 16 - 23, 2005
Where: Anapra, Mexico (across the bridge from El Paso, Texas, just northwest of Cuidad Juarez)
Cost: Sliding Scale $395-$475 (includes room and board and instruction)
Contact: For more information or to view their website.
To Register: Email worldhandsproject@yahoo.com
Questions? Contact Carolyn at WHP, 505-577-7831.
Clinic Expansion Week 2
Join them for the continuation of the above project as they work
toward completion of the clinic expansion. Week two will involve
more of the above, and will also include insulating and finishing
the roof, applying earthen plasters, electrical wiring and working
on any detailing required to finish the building to the best of
our abilities during the workshop dates.
When: October 23 - 30, 2005
Cost: Sliding Scale $395-$475 (includes room and board and instruction)
Attend one week or two!
Cost for attending both weeks: Sliding Scale $750 - $900
